If you read this site 4 years ago you might remember a Baltimore rapper named DK who had a song called "Part of History" on the Purple City album and had a dope mixtape out called King Me. I hadn't heard anything about dude in a while, but recently a reader e-mailed me asking if I knew what was up with him, and they ended up tipping me off to the fact that he's now going by D King, and recently did a song with Trina, "Just Like That," and the preview for the video on the YouTube above (the video preview's been online for like 6 months, don't know when the actual video is coming). I ended up following D King on Twitter and talking to him a little bit, and he sent me "I'm Fly," the single from his upcoming mixtape Behind The Musc: Seats Taken.

I already gave you my Best Baltimore Hip Hop Albums and Mixtapes of 2006 a couple weeks ago, so now it's time to look forward to the future with what I'm anticipating in '07. Of course, with the kind of delays you always get with rap albums, even underground projects, you never when anything's gonna drop, and a lot of these were on my most anticipated of '06 list. There are a lot of people that I know are dropping projects this year, but here are the ones I'm most lookin forward to that have set titles and labels right now:

1. Bossman - Law & Order (One Up/Virgin Records)
Hate him or love him, Bossman's still the one to watch as far as seeing if a major label audience is really ready to support a Baltimore MC this year. Everything I've heard that's going to be on this album is hot, so the quality isn't really a question so much as what it's gonna do.

2. Darkroom Productions - Hamsterdam 2: The Re-Up
This is gonna be out real soon, because the release party is this weekend, and I just got word that Darkroom will be featured in tomorrow's (January 4th) edition of the Baltimore Sun, so check that out. This is gonna be a must-have item just for all the songs that were used in The Wire. I hope the Diablo album Shop Closed drops this year, too.

3. D.O.G. - Champagne Dreams (Invisible Set/Universal Records)
Another major label project that it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. The album had already been delayed for a long time even by last summer when he got signed, so I've kinda been ready for this and I hope they don't wait so long that all the buzz he had last year dies down.

4. Tim Trees - Wayne Jones: The Business (Built For Business)
When I profiled Tim in the City Paper over a year ago, it sounded like the album was more or less done, but then nothing happened. But he's been performing live a lot more lately, including at Comp's mixtape release party this weekend, so maybe we'll finally get TT's third album this year.

5. various artists - Baltimore Club Crack (Milkcrate/Koch)
Another one that I haven't heard any progress or news about in a minute. When I interviewed Debonair Samir last summer and heard a rough mix of this album, he made it sound like the deal with Koch was done and the album would be out in '06, but I haven't heard any official word of it being on Koch's release schedule yet. I hope it does come out, though, it's a pretty dope compilation.

6. DK - A Part Of History (Babygrande Records)
DK's mixtape was one of my favorites of last year, and I just got word from him recently that before his debut album Words Of Art drops, there's going to be an EP/DVD called A Part Of History dropping in February.

7. Sonny Brown - Ginger Bread Man
Another mixtape I've been waiting on for a while now. I know Sonny's got something hot up his sleeve.

8. Los - Fly, Hungry, & Rich (Da Bloc Inc./Bad Boy)
I interviewed Los for the City Paper a couple months ago, but the article still hasn't come out because he's been really difficult about getting a photo shoot done. Talented cat, though, I hope he can do something within the major label system.

9. Midas - Battle Royale
His mixtape was nice but I know he's got some crazy material he's saving for the album.

10. Young Leek - Somethin' To Prove (Stay Gettin'/Def Jam)
Yet another project that seemed like it was making progress and they were getting ready to shoot a video and do some serious promotion, and then, nothing happened. Leek may not be a real hardcore Bmore MC or anything, but I'm definitely rooting for Stay Gettin' and the other people in his camp to have some success.

First of all, let me say that this is not The Government Names 2006 Baltimore Hip Hop Poll Results, which I posted the other day, and also that I kind of apologize for my attitude in that post. I knew going into it how it might turn out, and I still got a little bitter about it, and inadvertantly disrespected some of my favorite artists. But it seems like people understand now that I wasn't trying to diss anybody, and it's water under the bridge. Now, onto my official year-end wrap up, which is completely my opinion and noone else's. I won't say much about what my opinion means, because I'm just one person and I have my own biases, but the fact that I've heard this much local music, and that I know too many of the artists to feel any obligation to any one of them beyond saying how I really feel about their music, should speak for itself. But still, take it with a big grain of salt and understand I'm rooting for everybody. Enjoy the feast of mp3's, discover some artists you might like, click the links and get to know them. I'll be posting less often for the next 3 weeks or so, so you'll have plenty of time to digest this.

This is kind of an offbeat choice for #1, I don't think a lot of people heard this one, but in my opinion it was just the best, most complete album I heard out of the scene this year. Clayway doesn't rap real fancy but he has a laid back, conversational flow you can relate to, and by combining new material with some older career highlights, he put together a good, balanced album. But what I really loved about it was the personal storytelling perspective of songs like "B-More Hip Hop" and "Clay Family Story," squeezing years of history into brief songs and letting you inside his head.


2. Dirty Hartz - It Is What It Is Vol. 2 (Dirty Hartz Ent.)

Verb and everyone else in DH can just rhyme their asses off, and with a really hot selection of industry beats and original tracks by Debonair Samir, they did the mixtape thing more consistently than just about anybody this year.


3. Tyree Colion - Tyree Colion presents Hustle Hard Blvd (Rare Ent./Hustle Hard Blvd)

I was pleasantly surprised by how highly this placed in the poll, considering that Tyree got locked up before it was officially released and as a result it was never really promoted or heard by many people. But I think everyone that heard it has to respect the accomplishment of a triple CD where every disc is as consistent as most other dudes' whole mixtapes.


4. UnReal - Dat Boyz A Problem (UnReality Ent.)

UnReal has been a favorite of mine going back to his track from Hamsterdam, and he really pulled together almost all of his best joints for this one.

5. Mullyman - Still H.I.M . (Major League Unlimited/DJ Gemini)

Mullymania never totally lived up to my expectations, but he really came hard on the follow-up mixtape and let people know he wasn't going anywhere.

I don't think people in the city really realize yet who DK is, let alone how talented he is and that he's signed to a mid-sized national indie label. Maybe when he drops the album they'll start noticing.

Tha Annexx Click is one of those crews whose history goes back way further than my knowledge of the scene, back in the 90's, so I don't know how this measures up to the old stuff, but it made me a fan.


8. Skarr Akbar - The Cerebellum: General Part Four (Akbar Enterprize/DJ Radio)

Skarr released so much music this year that it's hard to say what his best release was -- he just put out a DVD/CD at all Downtown Locker Rooms this week that I haven't heard yet -- but this one is my favorite of the ones I've heard.


9. Barnes - The Last Shall Be First (Street Official/Sugar Water)

Barnes did it big with radio hits and national distribution this year, but I think the fact that he got locked up right for a while right after his album dropped kinda hurt his momentum. He really put out a quality album, though.


10. Bossman - BulletProof B (One Up Ent.)

Bossman hadn't really released too much new music since getting signed last year, but then recently he unleashed a whole 2 CD mixtape to make up for it, and I hope it really gets people ready for the Virgin album in the next few months.


11. PX (Parts Unknown) - Hood Therapy (Street Legal Entertainment/BRM Music/MDL Music)

I still feel really bad about disrespecting PX the other day, because they've been in this scene a long time and really didn't fuck around with this album, got good distribution and made sure people came out in droves to cop it, and not a lot of people around here have really accomplished that. And they've got a real unique sound that's all them, too.


12. B. Rich - Born Rich (Sure Shot Recordings)

For a lot of people around here, B. Rich's story is a cautional tale about how not to get treated by the industry. But it's really to his credit that he came back on an independent level all these years later and actually made an album that was better than his first.

I think Midas is one of the most promising MCs in the city right now, and this feels like a really good appetizer for the album he's dropping in '07.

Probably the best pleasant surprise I heard this year, as far as getting sent a CD by an artist I hadn't previously heard of.

I just did a big City Paper feature on Ray Lugar and the Low Key God that's coming real soon, so I won't say too much other than that these dudes are legends and you need to be familiar with them.

I don't know why Lab went back to a 2005 album and re-released it with some minor adjustments, but every change he made (compare the old version of "The Gift" to this one if you have both) made it better.

Along with Ammo, these kids are making being a teen rapper from Baltimore more respectable than the stuff getting played on the radio, they gotta be good to get co-signed by Skarr Akbar and Tyree Colion.

This is another one that's kinda grown on me with time, might end up belonging higher on this list in retrospect, but I'm not sure yet. Anything with One Up beats is worth copping, though.

Huli just didn't come as hard on this as his first album, it felt like a few singles with a lot of filler. And then the best single he dropped this year, "Work It Good," wasn't even on it.

Champagne Dreams probably would've been near the top of this list if it had dropped this year, but since D.O.G. got signed to Universal and pushed the album back once again, all we got this year was a mixtape that was way too short.

This had its moments but definitely did not live up to the "best rapper baltimore has ever seen" hype. He could stand to mumble a little less, it makes it hard to hear what he's saying.

Logik of Loaded Clipz Entertainment is an MC/producer who's been sending me some of his tracks to check out. In the next few weeks he'll be dropping a mixtape with DJ RPM called BODYMORE MURDALAND-Itz A Movement featuring DK, UnReal, Comp, Backland, Ogun and more. But in the meantime, he's got a lot of beats streaming on his Soundclick page, and he's performing this Thursday, August 31st at the Latin Palace at the Johnel mixtape release party. here's some of my favorite songs that he's produced:

This is the first track I heard produced by Logik, when it was on Street Radio Volume 2.5 and it's still probably my favorite. Like I said when I posted his song with ShellBe RAW, XO has a real ill unique voice, all grimey and gruff, I'm always checking for his songs on mixtapes.

Hazardous - "Home of Heroin" (mp3)
Hazardous, the Style Warz champ, on a real mellow Logik beat talking introspectively, some really sad mournful sounding shit.

DK - King Me (730 Commission/Babygrande/Streetsweepers)

This mixtape has been out for a few months but my review of it just ran in the City Paper this week. DK is from West Bmore, and is signed to Baby Grande Records as a solo artist and has an album called Words Of Art due out later this year. In the past I've posted his appearances on Purple City's albums (I didn't realize it at the time but "Part Of History" was produced by One Up, Bossman's production team), and recently I got some e-mails from DK himself letting me know what's up with him. Even though he's kind of running with a New York crew, he definitely shows love for the whole Bmore scene, and he shouts out Bossman, Backland and Comp on "Classic Shit." Nobody Smiling and YoRaps.com ran interviews with DK recently, and King Me is featured in the current issue of The Source (w/ Ice Cube on the cover) in the Tale Of The Tape column. This is definitely one of the best CD's I've heard from a Baltimore artist this year and I'm looking forward to the album.

Nice laid back track, one of my favorites.

DK - "Observing The Night" (mp3)
This was supposedly recorded when DK was 17, I guess around the time he had his deal with Jay-Z, but it's really as good or better than everything else on here. It doesn't even sound dated aside from having that Timbaland-style drum sound.

The 2006 talent show commercials will air on BET, MTV, TV-ONE and other cable stations in Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC, Virginia, North Carolina and Philadelphia. The commercials will begin eearly June 2006 and will air the entire month. DK, Un Kasa and A-Mafia - "Harlem To B-More" (mp3)

A couple months ago, I posted DK's solo track on Purple City's album from last year, but they just released a new album today called The Purple Album, and this is the track DK is featured on. He's also got a solo mixtape out with Kay Slay called King Me that I should be reviewing that at some point, and also check out this interview.

DK - "A Part Of History" (mp3)
DK, not to be confused with the D.K. that used to write for Gov't Names, is a rapper from Baltimore who's signed with Purple City, Sheist Bub's Diplomats-affiliated crew. They released an album, Road To Riches, on Babygrande last year, and "A Part Of History" was DK's solo track on the album. He also had a freestyle with Un Kasa, Sheist Bub and Domination, which you can listen to here, that was on Purple City Candyland mixtape. Purple City has a new album coming out this year that DK will probably be featured on, and Babygrande will be releasing a DK solo album sometime this year. You can go to DK's official site to listen to "A Part Of History" and a couple freestyles and read a bio about how he was previously signed by Jay-Z when he was a teenager. A while back here on Gov't Names, a dude named Lil Hertz who said he was part of DK's 730 crew commented on one of my posts and kinda got into some arguments with people. I didn't really get involved in that, though, hopefully noone's holding grudges about whatever that was about. I'm not the biggest Dipset fan, but I gotta give them respect for supporting a lot of Baltimore artists, between signing NOE, Jim Jones doing a song with D.O.G., Cam'ron doing a song with Comp, Stay Gettin' doing beats for Killa Season, and DK hooking up with Purple City.
