A rough guide to the connections between HBO's The Wire and Baltimore hip hop
Over the past few months, I've written a lot about The Wire, including my thoughts on recent episodes and a comprehensive guide to Wire cast members' appearances in music videos over on my other blog, Narrowcast. And with the season finale fast approaching on December 10th, I thought I'd put together a guide to the ways in which the show has become intertwined with the Baltimore hip hop scene (aside from everyone making references to it in the lyrics, which maybe I'll do a rundown of another time).
Music Used in the Show:
As has been covered on this site and in the pages of the New York Times and The Baltimore City Paper, Wire music supervisor Blake Leyh has recently begun incorporating music from numerous Baltimore artists this season (in addition to Baltimore club tracks by DJ Technics in previous seasons), including Darkroom Productions (who came to The Wire's attention after naming their mixtape Hamsterdam, which was inspired by season 3), Diablo ("Jail Flick"), Mullyman ("Get Ready (Bodymore Soldiers)" and "The Life, The Hood, The Streetz"), Dirty Hartz ("That's Da Sound"), Tyree Colion ("My Projects"), Tha Plague a.k.a. GEM, Paula Campbell ("Love You Back") and Rod Lee ("Dance My Pain Away"). I've already posted several of these tracks as part of a continuing series as the episodes have aired:
as heard on The Wire, part 1
as heard on The Wire, part 2
as heard on The Wire, part 3
This season also featured a memorable scene in which hired killers Chris and Snoop sniff out New Yorkers dealing on Baltimore territory by quizzing them on their knowledge of Young Leek's single "Jiggle It" and 92Q's Big Phat Morning Show.
Cast Connections:
Michael K. Williams appeared on skits for Bossman's mixtapes Charm City's King and This Is A Warning in character as Omar.
Richard Burton, who played Shamrock, right hand man to Stringer Bell and Avon Barksdale, in the first 3 seasons, is the architect of the Believe Tour, which has featured Baltimore rappers such as Bossman, Tim Trees, Huli Shallone, Mullyman, D.O.G., Cooli Hi, Young Leek.
Teenage actor Nathan Corbett, who is featured on the 4th season as Donut, the kid that keeps stealing cars, is also a rapper signed to K-Swift’s Next Level label (the actor who plays Namond is also starting a career as a rapper, but I don't think he's from Baltimore or working with anyone from Bmore).
Cameos by Baltimore Artists:
Ammo, of the Gritty Gang and Real On Purpose Entertainment, appeared in several episodes in seasons 3 and 4 in a recurring role as Spider, one of the teenagers who boxes at Cutty's gym.
Skarr Akbar appeared in two episodes in season 2 with a speaking role as an unnamed rival dealer engaged in a turf war with Bodie and Poot.
In the second episode of season 3, “All Due Respect,” the guy who shoots Dozerman is played by Little Clayway.
Blankman of the group PX (Parts Unknown) appeared in the fourth episode of Season 4 as the security guard at the card game where Omar robs Marlo.
Rapper and Hip Hop 101 host Sonny Brown appears in two episodes in Season 4, once as one of the cops who runs into the cafeteria when Omar stabs someone in jail, and another where he helps break up the riot in front of a bar when the cops are making unnecessary arrests.

Billo "The Hood Rockstar" - Daily Grind Vol. 2 "We Got Another One" (For The People Ent.)
Yet another review I had in the City Paper last week was of the latest mixtape from Billo. I've written about his first mixtape Daily Grind Vol. 1 and his label For The People Entertainment here in the past. This new one's definitely his best stuff that I've heard from him to date, it's got the "Where The Block At" remix and a lot of other good tracks. The whole FTP/Squadre Committee crew is performing at Sonar on December 7th, I'll post that flyer soon.
Billo - "Going Through Some Things" (mp3)
This is the first song on the mixtape and it's really kind of powerful for a kind of introspective song to be right at the beginning, when most rappers bury this kind of song at the end of a CD.
Billo - "Stand Up Guy" (mp3)
There are a few kinda catchy club-friendly songs on here but this one's definitely my favorite.

If you've looked here in the past couple days you've probably noticed that the bill for this show changed a couple times as Infamous Mobb and Big Noyd have jumped off the bill and then back on and so on. I got the call from Sonny Brown a couple hours ago that they're not gonna make it after all, so just so you know. I believe the bill will now be:

Midas - Pay-Per-View (Team Green/Beat Game)
Midas is, aside from being a really talented MC who's won Style Warz and a few other battles, a good dude and easily one of the most humble and down to earth people I've met in this scene, and the fact that he's only 21 makes it even crazier. So I was real happy to get a review of his debut solo mixtape in the City Paper this week. Earlier this year I wrote about the Team Green mixtape he appeared on, and a couple months ago I posted the single "Hater Face" from this mixtape, which was originally called The Arcade. The mixtape just dropped this week and you can buy it off his MySpace page, and E Major did a great job on the cover art.
Midas - "The Man With The Golden Gun" (mp3)
Akira The Great produced most of the tracks on here, and he always comes with the hot samples, I didn't even know Midas could flow doubletime like that.
Midas - "MayDay!" (mp3)
I posted here a while back about Logik of Loaded Clipz Entertainment, and he produced one of the best tracks on here.

PX (Parts Unknown)- Hood Therapy (Street Legal Entertainment/BRM Music/MDL Music)
PX's 2nd album dropped with national distribution way back in September, and I've had it since then but wanted to hold off posting about it here until my review ran in the City Paper, which it did this week (along with reviews of mixtapes by UnReal, which I posted about a couple months ago, and Midas and Billo, which I'll post about in the next few days). It's a real solid album and from what I hear they're doing pretty well with it right now, moving units and getting airplay around the country.
PX (Parts Unknown) - "All I Need" (mp3)
One of the only tracks not produced by Parts Unknown's 3rd member LB, DJ Booman killing it once again on a hip hop tip.
PX (Parts Unknown) f/ OOH and Symantyx - "Hustler's Spirit" (mp3)
OOH from Brown F.I.S.H. does the first verse on this, it's a shame I haven't really posted any Brown F.I.S.H. music on here before but I generally post recent stuff and most of the music I have by them is old.

as heard on The Wire: part 3
I've done this twice before, and I'm gonna doing this, giving you the music you've been hearing on HBO's The Wire this season. These two songs appear in the first scene of episode 47, airing tonight at 10:
Tyree Colion - "My Projects" (mp3)
This Darkroom-produced track is from Tyree's great triple CD mixtape that's been sadly unheard, since Tyree got locked up around the time it was about to drop. Kind of a shame that when he's got a song being heard on national television, he's in the middle of serving a four year sentence. Free Colion!
Dirty Hartz f/ Mullyman - "That's Da Sound" (mp3)
This is probably my favorite single that anyone from Baltimore has dropped in the past year, so I'm hyped about it getting prominent placement in the show. It only got a moderate amount of airplay from 92Q, but it appeared on a ton of mixtapes by DH, Mully, DNA and C Love. They yell "aaayyyeeerrrppp!!" in the hook, and after Bossman's "A-Yo" came out a while back Verb got heated and did a freestyle at 5 Seasons about how it was a bite, but really people have been saying "ayo" in Baltimore forever (hell, you can hear Omar saying it in the first season of The Wire), noone can really take credit for it. But anyway, great song, produced by Debonair Samir, I'm still wondering what's up with that Baltimore Club Crack compilation, which this song also appears on. Buy DH's mixtapes on MySpace.

PenDragon - Revenge Of The Harm City King (Team Arson Music/DragonMoon Records)
I got sent this CD by PenDragon a while back, and though it always kinda rubs me the wrong way when dudes call themselves the king of the city, especially if I've never heard of them, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by it. Drag talks a lot of shit on the mixtape and disses the whole club rap thing, but he's got the skills and the swagger to pull off that kind of cockiness, with a voice that reminds me of Skarr Akbar, with a hint of Talib Kweli and Jay-Z in there too. And the original beats on the mixtape are really consistent, this is a dude to check for.
PenDragon - "Baltimore Dreaming" (mp3)
One of my favorite tracks on here, produced by Drag himself.
PenDragon f/ Street Heat and Jae Poet - "Bang Bang" (mp3)
Street Heat, who produced a few good songs on here (but only raps on this one), produced track 11 on the new Jim Jones album, so check that out, Team Arson doing big things.

The November/December issue of Mic Life Magazine is out now, and I reccomend picking it up because it's the first issue to feature me as a contributing writer. You can order it via PayPal on their MySpace page, or pick up a copy at Mic Life's Warm Wednesdays at 5 Seasons. I wrote a feature on an MC named Jade Fox, whose album is really good and I'll be posting about here when it drops in the next few weeks. And I did the mag's reviews section, and covered 7 Baltimore hip hop CDs that I've written about here on GN in the past few months:
Mullyman - Still H.I.M.
Little Clayway - Still Movin' Independently: The Takeover
Mike Malachi - Malachi's Way
Cutthroat - Chapter 2.5: Words Can't Explain It
Third Kind - Disaster Relief
(EDIT: nevermind, they cut all the reviews except the Mike Malachi one)
They're pretty long, detailed reviews, moreso than what I usually write here, or even sometimes in the City Paper, so I think it's definitely worth checking out. I haven't even seen a final copy of the issue yet myself, I need to get one of those from Fredlocks.

as heard on The Wire: part 2
Like I started doing a couple weeks ago, I gotta keep you up on the tracks by Baltimore artists that are being used in the current season of HBO's The Wire. Blake Leyh, The Wire's music supervisor and the guy who's responsible for getting a lot of real Baltimore music in the show, linked Gov't Names on his blog recently, which I thought was pretty awesome. Here's a track that appears in episode 46 airing this Sunday at 10:
Mullyman - "Get Ready (Bodymore Soldiers)" (mp3)
You might remember this song from when I world premiered it back in March, I guess it's gonna be on Hamsterdam 2. I love the part where Mully kinda makes fun of the cheesy explain-the-punchline solid-water-Ice-Cube style, "refusin' to slack up like I hate dress pants/ get it? slacks? dress pants? nevermind, fuck it." I've got another unreleased Mully/Darkroom joint from around the same time that they decided not to release and use the beat for something else that I think is pretty hot, maybe I'll get permission to leak it sometime. Mullyman's single "The Life, The Hood, The Streetz" is set to appear in the season finale, and I've already gotten word from Mully that he's going to do a big show in December to comemorate the event.

The current issue of Rolling Stone magazine has a feature on page 90 called "Where Hip-Hop Lives" which profiles 5 cities that could be "the next Houston," and one of them is Baltimore. Darkroom Productions, Deep Flow Studios, Bossman, Paula Campbell, Club Choices and 5 Seasons all get mentions in the article. I don't know what's up with them saying "stunna shades" are the must-have accessory in Bmore, though, isn't that more of a Bay Area thing?

Bossman - BulletProof B (Virgin Records/One Up Ent.)
With the "A-Yo" single popping off and Virgin starting to really move forward with promoting Bossman, the Law & Order album is getting set up for a release date in the first quarter of 2007, February or March or something. And to ramp up the buzz, he just released a double CD mixtape, which is available at the Sound Garden now and which I hear you'll be able to buy via PayPal on his MySpace page soon. I half expected this to be a rehash of older stuff from the independent album and previous mixtapes, because it's 2 CD's and because that's kinda what This Is A Warning was (Bossman had another mixtape between those called The Yellow Tape, but I never heard it). But this one is really heavy on recent and previously unreleased stuff, a lot of freestyles and original songs I haven't heard before, good shit, including material with Dollars and Tony Manson from N.E.K. and some hype for the Dollars solo mixtape that's dropping soon. Some of my personal favorites on here are the "Hollywood Divorce" freestyle that 92Q's been playing lately, and the live version of "You're Wrong" with just vocals and an acoustic guitar, which works better than I would've expected it to. There's also the Rod Lee-produced track "Let's Go," which Bossman performed over a year and a half ago at Ogun's release party saying it was his next single but then it never came out. It seems like Bossman's been laying low in Baltimore for a lot of this year finishing the album and travelling out of town, but this mixtape should really get people's attention. He was also HipHopGame.com's artist of the month for October.
Bossman - "BulletProof B" (mp3)
A couple weeks ago, after Jermaine Dupri left Virgin Records, people around here immediately began speculating that it would fuck up Bossman's deal since JD signed him. But Nieze from One Up assured me that since they already started moving on their promotion and are signed direct to Virgin, not through So So Def, it probably won't really effect them. And already, Bossman's got a song about the whole situation, setting the record straight.
Bossman - "Tinted Crown Vics" (mp3)
Crown Victorias seem like such a Baltimore car, I always see them on the street and hear references in Bmore rappers' lyrics. I remember the first time I heard this song at the Ottobar show a year ago, with the slowed-down loop of a line from "Oh" as the hook.

Alevan - Came Here 4 (Alevan, Inc.)
At the C Love/DNA showcase at Sonar back in August, some guy was handing out CDs and gave one to me. Never heard of Alevan, but there was a song with Skarr Akbar on it, so I took it home and listened. Alevan is a duo comprised of Al Great and E. Dott, and the group name is derived from their first names (Alexander and Evan). The whole album is full of those kinds of plush, shiny, sentimental beats that sound kind of soft in the context of the average rap album, but lined up all together they kind of create a nice unique vibe, E. Dott did all the beats and I like his style. Check out Alevan on MySpace.
Alevan - "Back @ It" (mp3)
This is one of the more upbeat songs, the drums kinda remind me of "Hate It Or Love It," some hot strings on the chorus too.
Alevan f/ Beano and Skarr Akbar - "Take It From Me" (mp3)
Skarr does the hook and the hottest verse on here, dude never disappoints.
