In this week's Baltimore City Paper, I wrote a big feature about Kane Mayfield and his debut album, The Return Of Rap, which just came out. I've known Kane and followed his music for years now and it's great to hear him put out a record worthy of his talent and get a chance to tell his story.
Also wrote The Short List and a new BPM column with news about DJ Technics, TT The Artist, Rod Lee, and more.

This week the Baltimore City Paper published its annual Top 10 issue, with lots and lots of year-end lists, and I contributed some things in the music section. I did year-end editions of my BPM column, with the best Baltimore club releases of 2014, and my Rap Sheet column, with the best local rap of the year. I voted in several other music lists, including Local Albums (where I wrote blurbs about Future Islands and Wye Oak), Local Singles (where I blurbed Lor Scoota), and Non-Local Albums (where I blurbed YG).
Also wrote The Short List this week as usual.

This upcoming Friday, August 15th, Boiler Room is bringing a bunch of folks from Baltimore up to New York for a live broadcast of Baltimore club music from Rod Lee, Scottie B, DJ Technics, Mighty Mark & TT The Artist. I've also been asked to come up to write about the whole thing for Boiler Room, so NYC folks, let me know if you want to come to the event and/or hang out while I'm in town for the weekend.

Last year, I was contacted by the Oxford University Press about authoring a reference article about Baltimore Club Music for the Oxford African American Studies Center, as part of a series of updates dealing with Baltimore. The article was finally published in February, and although it's generally conceived as a reference work for students, they have made the article available to the public here (the link won't last forever, but if anyone ever wants it put back up after it expires, let me know). It was really an honor to be asked to do this and to try and bring my knowledge about this subject to an academic setting and put it in a larger cultural context.

This week the Baltimore City Paper published its annual Top Ten issue, and I wrote a lot of stuff both that appears in it, both top ten lists and otherwise:
- A feature on Blaqstarr, my third and by far most in-depth interview to date with one of the true geniuses of Baltimore club music.
- My regular BPM column on dance music, with news about Murder Mark (now Mighty Mark) and others.
- The Short List of concerts in Baltimore for the coming week.
- Lots and lots of top ten lists. I voted for the top ten albums of 2013 list, and wrote a blurb about the Elvis Costello & The Roots album, and also voted for the top ten local albums of 2013, and wrote a blurb about the Dungeonesse album. As we did last year, there were also a bunch of genre-specific lists, and once again I contributed a few: top ten hip-hop albums, top ten local hip-hop albums, top ten dance tracks and top ten Baltimore club tracks.

The Baltimore City Paper's annual Top Ten issue is out this week, and I helped with the music lists, of which there were many. In the Top Ten Albums list, I wrote blurbs about Miguel and Dead Sara, and in the Top Ten Local Albums list, I wrote about Dan Deacon and Lower Dens. But this year we also did something new: a bunch of Top Ten Releases By Genre lists, including my Top Ten Local Hip-Hop Albums and Top Ten Baltimore Club Tracks.
Also in this week's issue, I wrote a feature about the artist who topped my Local Hip-Hop list, Von Vargas, and as usual, The Short List of the concerts to check out in the city this week.
