It's official: Heavy Gold got a deal with Epic Records. I got a text message from Stay Gettin' this past Monday with the full announcement:
Stay Gettin' Ent. has done it again. Heavy Gold has signed to Epic Records after having three labels at the door and all this with no radio play just talent.
Thanks to everyone that supported Stay Gettin' and Heavy Gold
Special thanks to Jay Claxton the official "Stay Gettin' DJ"
Y'all know the name
We takin' over...
Check Heavy Gold out on HipHopGame.com
Look for him in upcoming XXL Vibe and Source magazines...
The signing party is being put together now and also we have a crew coming down to shoot 2 videos
Jay Claxton will be putting everyone on point with schedules and everything else
Once again thanks to all the supporters
I kinda knew this was coming, when I saw Kuntre and Millz from Stay Gettin' at the Making The Right Moves conference a few months ago, they said they were working on a major deal for Heavy Gold, and that they were trying to end up somewhere other than Def Jam, since their Young Leek deal over there ended up going nowhere. If you don't really know who Heavy Gold is, he's been in the Baltimore hip hop scene for a long long time, he was one of the original members of N.E.K. who left the group, along with Cash, when the focus got put on Bossman's solo career. More recently, he's been rolling with Skarr Akbar as a member of his crew, The Arabz, and working with Stay Gettin'. I've posted a couple songs with him on it this year, his solo track "Charm City" and Skarr's "I'm So Fly" remix.
I'm definitely excited for Heavy Gold's deal, and I wish him the best, although I hope he made the right decision and does have a good relationship with this label. If you follow the music industry much, you may already know that Epic Records has not even had an urban music staff since last December, and there was a story more recently that they had to outsource hip hop/R&B marketing help from Koch Records just to break the Sean Kingston record. If you look at the current Epic roster, it's pretty pathetic as far as hip hop is concerned. The biggest rapper they've got right now is that Yung Berg dude, who's garbage and didn't even get to put out an album when he had a hit single, just an EP. I might sound like a real pessimist here, but I'm just reiterating what I said in the Best Doomed Major Label Contract blurb in this year's Best of Baltimore issue: getting a deal is really the beginning of a whole new struggle. I hope Heavy Gold watched what happened with Bossman and other local cats who got deals, and learned from it. Maybe he's is one of the first artists Epic plans on using to rebuild its urban roster, but I just hope his team is ready to get his buzz going without the label's help.
Anyway, the bottom line is that Heavy Gold is a dope MC who has paid his dues in this city, and this could be the start of something big for him. Check out the tracks on his MySpace page, his single "Who Dat" on Stay Gettin's MySpace, and the YouTube video I put in this post, it's for his song "Drug Dealer," which really flips the whole concept of what you'd think a song with that title would be about in a smart way. Here are a few of my favorite Heavy Gold collabs:
Bossman f/ Heavy Gold, Dollars and Ameisha - "Last Dance Part II" (mp3)
This is a track from Bossman's 2004 independent album Law & Order, produced by Debonair Samir.
Skarr Akbar f/ Heavy Gold - "What Happened To That Boy" Freestyle (mp3)
Skarr and H. Gold on one of my favorite Neptunes beats, good shit.
Bossman f/ Tony Manson, Dollars, Skarr Akbar, Heavy Gold, Goose, Hots, TestMe, Tim Trees and Caddy Da Don - "Bmore" Freestyle (mp3)
This is a track from that End Of Discussion mixtape I just posted about a couple weeks ago, just a monster posse cut, 10 MC's in 9 minutes, and Heavy Gold is somewhere in there in the middle.

Over on Nah Right a couple weeks ago, I saw this sidebar from the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine, and down at the bottom I spotted a mention of the Baltimore club "SpongeBob" dance and all the videos of kids doing it on YouTube. If you've never seen it, search variations on Spongebob + dance + Baltimore and there's literally hundreds, if not thousands of videos. You might remember when I posted a whole mess of club dancing YouTube videos about a year ago, and if anything there's way more now than there were back then. The background music in the majority of these videos is "Tote It" by Blaq Starr.

Backland - This Is Me (Block Boy Music)
Backland has been one of the best rappers in Baltimore since the 90's and has maintained that position even though a car accident took him out of the game for a couple years there. But this is his second CD after his comeback, just a year after Back In Business, and he's still better than most of the other MC's out here. Backland was working the door at 5 Seasons last time I was there and handed me a copy of this as I was leaving, thanks to him for that. You can download the whole mixtape for free on the mixtape site Datpiff.com, and I love seeing Bmore artists on that site, that's a tool that a lot more people could be taking advantage of. There's guest appearances from Stackz, B.O.M.B., D. Davis, Mr. Wilson from JI-900 and others. A whole lot of Backland's appearances on 106 & Park's Freestyle Fridays used to be on YouTube, but Viacom are a real bitch about shutting down any videos of their shows and took most of them down. Someone uploaded this one pretty recently, though, peep it before they catch it.
Backland f/ Huli Shallone - "Off My Block" (mp3)
This sounds more like a Huli Shallone song than a Backland song, production-wise, but Backland kills his verse. I haven't heard much from Huli lately, does he have anything new out? There was a rumor going around a few months ago that Huli had signed to Universal Records, but his official MySpace page (there were a lot of other pages by people impersonating him before he finally got on MySpace himself) still lists his label as "unsigned."

State Of The Arts - Sun Ra Used To Say (2438 Entertainment)
A few weeks ago I got contacted by some cats from this group State Of The Arts, who came to meet me and give me a copy of their album. I listened to it, and was really pleasantly surprised, so I went to check out their show at Sonar that week and reviewed it on Noise, and I thought they were the best act on the bill. SOTA is comprised of members of the groups Raw Earth and Circle Of Native Vibes, and a solo singer named Stephanie Lightfoot. I've never heard the members' previous work but I like this, it's on kind of an abstract old school tip like noone else in Baltimore besides Labtekwon is really doing. And I dig the fact that they put Sun Ra in their album title, I used to listen to him a lot when I was younger, if you don't know he was this jazz bandleader who claimed to be from the planet Saturn, really far out guy. SOTA are performing at Sonar again this Thursday, I posted the flyer the other day.
State Of The Arts - "Sideways" (mp3)
This is one of the last tracks on the album and easily one of my favorites, that loop is killer, kinda gives me a 90's golden era vibe.

New stuff on Noise @ http://noise.citypaper.com lately: I did a Noise in Brief column full of small Baltimore music news items and links about Bossman, Mullyman, Paula Campbell, The Wire, Blaq Starr, Labtekwon, Monarch, Thrushes, B.O.M.B. and Darkroom Productions. I interviewed DJ Tigga for The Club Beat. I saw a bunch of producers compete at the Beatman Battle II @ 5 Seasons, which was won by B-Banks, and featured some great beats by Comp, Max-A-Million, Dave Da Barber, E-Watts and others. Also, I caught Sonar's "Hip Hop For The Headstrong" night with Flawless, State Of The Arts, J-Optimo, Snapz, and Planet SB, and T.I. and Ciara and T-Pain @ 1st Mariner Arena, Michael McDonald @ Pier Six Pavillion (Bret McCabe to me at the Best of Baltimore party the other night: "so...Michael McDonald, huh?"), and They Might Be Giants @ Rams Head Live.

DJ Tigga - It's Not A Fuckin' Game! Vol. 21 (Bounce Alot Productions)
For my latest Club Beat column over on Noise, I interviewed DJ Tigga, whose track "Independence Day" I posted here in January, and I've really been digging his production lately. You can check the article, but it seems like he's got a lot of exciting things going on with his company, Bounce Alot Productions, right now. This is his latest Baltimore club mix and he squeezes over 50 tracks in there, from the usual suspects like Rod Lee and Blaq Starr and Lil Jay and Mike Mumbles and so on. Generally I prefer club mixes that let each song play out a bit instead of ones that cram in as many as possible, but this one works with that approach and is just paced really well and never lets up the momentum, definitely one of the most consistently enjoyable club mix CD's I've heard this year. I wish I had a tracklisting, though.
K-Spin - "Why I'm Hot" (mp3)
I kinda feel like Baltimore club versions of whatever hip hop song is big at the moment have kinda been done to death lately, to the point that you know what they're gonna sound like before you hear them most of the time, so I'm more about seeking out the tracks with original melodies or lyrics or less obvious samples these days. But this is one remix that I really like, partly because instead of just taking the original Mims version, K-Spin remixed the reggae remix with Junior Reid and Cham, making little loops and hooks out of stuff like the sample of Dawn Penn's "No No No" and chopping Junior Reid's voice, and made something way hotter than if it was just a predictable "This Is Why I'm Hot" club remix. I don't even like the song that much! This version is just fire.

The City Paper's biggest issue of the year, Best Of Baltimore 2007, is out this week, and I wrote more than twice as many blurbs than either previous year that I contributed to the issue (that was one rough deadline week, believe me). The blurbs I wrote and awards I had a hand in deciding are as follows:
Best Band Web Site: Karmella's Game
Best Singer/Songwriter: Lizz King
Best Male MC: Skarr Akbar
Best Female MC: Jade Fox
Best Hip-Hop DJ: DJ Vicious V
Best Club DJ: KW Griff
Best Club Music Producer: King Tutt
Best Beatmaker: One Up Entertainment
Best Summer Jam: "Chicken Box" by Silohette (which I posted recently)
Best Posse Cut: "I'm So Fly" Remix by Skarr Akbar featuring Bossman, D.O.G., Barnes, A-maz-on, Heavy Gold, and SK (another one I've posted)
Best Doomed Major Label Contract: A-maz-on
Best Music Radio Show: 92Q's Rap Attack
Best Place To Hear Hip-Hop: The (New Turntable Club)
Best New Club: Lo-Fi Social Club
Best Karaoke: Hip-Hop Karaoke at Latin Palace
I haven't had a chance to read through the rest of the issue yet, but obviously, you should pick up a copy for yourself or at least browse all over the site for all the interesting and right on and totally wrong awards I had nothing to do with. The party is on Thursday night and I've tried to contact every winner whose category I wrote to make sure they get their invitations, but there are still a couple of people that we never got an address to mail them to. If any of them still need ad invite, e-mail me ASAP and I'll let you know who to call. Congrats to everyone who won, hopefully I'll see you there.

Bossman - End Of Discussion / Dollars - The Overdose (One Up Ent./N.E.K./Power Hitters)
You probably heard already, either on his Rap Attack interview or somewhere else, that Bossman has been officially off Virgin/Capital Records since July, after 2+ years of being signed. And if you read my City Paper cover story back in March, you probably knew things were headed in that direction and that the label didn't really know what to do with him. HipHopGame.com already confirmed that he's in talks with other labels, including Warner Bros., that are interested in buying the Law & Order album from him and putting it out. I hope he does get to do that, even if it's just with a large indie label with national distribution, because I'd love to finally hear the finished album after all these mixtapes. Almost every track I've heard from the album has been dope and it'd be a shame if it stayed on a shelf. On the interludes on this one Boss really opens up about the whole experience and talks about being in the studio with producers like Scott Storch and Just Blaze and Kwame and Rockwilder and No I.D., I'd love to hear all those tracks finally. And on some tracks he doesn't hold back about his frustrations with the label, on the "I Get Money" freestyle there's a pretty crazy part that goes "JD dropped enough bricks, he can build a building/ I'm a free agent now, so I guess I can reveal it/ yeah, I fucked Janet, then I wrote Bow Wow's shit/ I'm lyin', if that was true, you'd probably wild out, bitch" and they had to play that shit back on Rap Attack like 3 times.
Instead of another double disc mixtape from Bossman like last year's Bullet Proof B, this is actually just one disc of Bossman, and one of Dollars, another member of N.E.K. I remember when I interviewed Bossman he said they were planning on getting a Dollars solo mixtape out this year, I guess they decided that the best way to get that heard was to package both these projects together. Dollars has kind of seemed like N.E.K.'s second in command since Bossman became the group's top priority and Cash and Heavy Gold left, so him doing a solo joint is a long time coming. He's got his own kinda charisma and has a good sense of humor, really kills some of these tracks and Bossman guests on a few tracks on it. I still wanna hear a solo Tony Manson project too, though, he's nice. These discs feature guest appearances from C.R., Skarr Akbar, Tim Trees, the whole N.E.K./One Up movement. You can cop the mixtape on Bossman's MySpace, or you can even download the first disc for free off this mixtape site datpiff.com, which also has an unofficial Bossman mixtape with old tracks called No Law No Order. I'll post a song from each disc:
Bossman f/ Dollars, TestMe, Caddy Da Don, Hots and A-maz-on - "So Fresh (Remix)" (mp3)
This song has really grown on me over the last few months, I think it's probably sicker than any of the singles Bossman dropped when he was actually signed, so it should keep his buzz strong. The way this remix came together is pretty crazy, too, even though they kinda kept the lineup just within their crew for the most part.
Dollars - "My City" (mp3)
I like this beat, it's the same sample as Twista's "Overnight Celebrity" but chopped up differently.

You might remember that I posted a notice about Mullyman's video shoot. I was a little skeptical since the song, produced by Jay Funk, isn't one of my favorites off of Industry Invasion. But this video is some genius shit, mainly because he got Matthew Lesko to do a cameo. If you don't know who that is, I'm sure you'll recognize him once you watch the video, Mullyman's "Hustleman Shuffle":
I just wrote about Labtekwon's new album with The Tao Of Slick the other day, and then I found a video they made for the first song, The Tao Of Slick's "Liquid Light":
PenDragon just sent me the video for one of my favorite songs off his last mixtape, and if you check the links to his other videos he's got a bunch of interesting video blogs where he speaks on various issues, plus this song, PenDragon's "Bang Bang" featuring Street Heat and Jae Poet:
This is one of my favorite tracks off the album, which I reviewed a few weeks ago, Minlus McCracken's "Clear Liquor, Brown Liquor" featuring Bad Habit:
Also, apparently Young Leek has a cameo in this new DJ Jazzy Jeff/Peedi Crakk video, but I don't know where he is in it.

The Tao of Slick presents Jazz Hall: The Epitome Of Epiphany (Ankh Ba Records)
A few weeks ago I dropped by the City Paper office and one of my editors gave me a couple copies of new albums from Labtekwon's Ankh Ba label that had just come in, which are now on sale at local stores like the Sound Garden, and also available on iTunes. Both are kind of groups featuring Lab rather than solo joints, and I haven't listened to the other one, CSD, yet, but I really like this one. The Tao Of Slick is a jazz-themed project with beats by Thur Deephrey, sung vocals by Hazel Black, and rapped vocals by Lab, under the alias Piankhi 7. I saw them perform at Eden's Lounge a while back and reviewed it for Noise, good show.
The Tao Of Slick - "Cosmic Lullaby" (mp3)
This song really just has the illest loop on the album, in my opinion, it really kinda hops along in a weird rhythm.

Goddamn! Sometimes I wondered if I'd never see something like this, Bossman and Mullyman not only in the same photo, but on the cover of a magazine together. To be honest, I'm jealous of The Flywire, I wish I could've pulled something like this off. You can download PDF file of the whole issue off the Flywire website, go to page 10 for the article, which includes a photo spread of Bossman, Mullyman, Skarr Akbar, Comp, Ms. Stress, Nik Stylz, and Norm Skola. It's a beautiful thing, so much respect to everybody involved for doing this.

The True Vine in Hampden has one of the craziest collections of Baltimore club viny of any record store I've seen, especially because Scottie B. and DJ Booman have unloaded thousands of their records there in the past year. Their Bmore club CD section, however, is a lot smaller, a few mixes by Blaq Starr and others, and a whole bunch by this cat, DJ Frie. Practically this whole Da Club Tip series is in there, but I just picked up the most recent one I saw, and it has a lot of the big club music records from the past few months. There's a whole lot of Rod Lee on here, almost half the tracks, along with Say-Wut and Tigga and Johnny Blaze and others. I'm not too familiar with DJ Frie, I think he's tight with Samir. And according to a recent Scottie B. interview, either DJ Frie or Lil J was the first person to shout "down the hill" on a club record, before Rod Lee or anyone else, and that in itself makes him a real part of club history.
Rod Lee - "Understand" (mp3)
This is a classic track, at least 6 or 7 years old and one of my favorites from back when I started listening to Baltimore club music real heavily. The crazy thing is that this is that the version of this song on Rod Lee's Operation: Start-Up omits my favorite part of the song, the little spoken rap in the middle, and this DJ Frie mix is the first time I've found a version with all the lyrics on a CD. I love Rod's little rant in there, and still think about it anytime I hear someone hating on club music or getting shit twisted about it: "check this out, I'm getting sick and tired of everybody talkin' about Baltimore club this, Baltimore club that. If you don't understand the Baltimore club, keep ya mouth to yourself, don't get mad with me 'cause your brain can't tick fast enough to rock with me!"
