I also wrote a new installment of the dance music column BPM, which includes some exclusive Baltimore club news about forthcoming releases from Rod Lee and Unruly Records.
Also, as usual, wrote this week's Short List.

Tough Breaks Update: Words. Beats. Life, WYPR, Kickstarter and more
It’s been about a week since I announced Tough Breaks: The Story of Baltimore Club Music and launched the official website, and I just wanted to put together a quick update of some things going on related to the project:
- The new issue of Words.Beats.Life: The Global Journal of Hip Hop Culture has just been published, and features an article I wrote about Baltimore club music. The Washington, D.C.-based peer-reviewed academic periodical asked me a while back to contribute to its Sex Issue, and the piece I wrote is titled “Sex In This Club: Gender And Sexuality in Baltimore Club Music.” It touches on the sexually explicit nature of Baltimore club lyrics, gender dynamics in the club community, and the role that female and gay musicians have played in the scene over the years, focusing on the late Khia “Club Queen K-Swift” Edgerton and the late Anthony “Miss Tony” Boston. The piece also features previously unpublished quotes from my personal interview archive from people like Ron “Dukeyman” Hall, 2 Hyped Brothers & A Dog producer Al “T” McLaran, and Club Queen Entertainment staffers Buck Jones, Lady Pitbull and Crystal Tennessee. Although the article, like my other freelance works, won’t appear in Tough Breaks, it can be considered something of a preview of one of the topics that will be explored further in the book. More information on Words. Beats. Life and how to pick up a copy of the new issue is available at http://www.wblinc.org.
- Baltimore club veteran DJ Booman and I recently taped a segment as guests of Baltimore public radio station WYPR 88.1FM, which will air next Monday, June 7th on Maryland Morning. In the 10-15 minute segment, WYPR’s Tom Hall interviews Booman and I about the early days of Baltimore club music and we get a bit into the history and the culture of the scene and the music, and Booman produced a special track for the occasion that should be fun for everyone to hear. The piece will air between 9:30 and 10am on Monday morning, but should also be available to stream on the WYPR site, http://www.wypr.org.
- The page for Tough Breaks on fundraising website Kickstarter.com has gotten off to a great start since its launch last week. In its first 7 days, the project has raised over $1,400 towards its $5,000 goal. There's almost a month between now and the July 1st deadline, but there's a lot still left to raise, and I hope anyone who hasn't already is considering even a small pledge, because if we don't reach the goal by then, none of the donations go through.
- The Tough Breaks announcement has been posted on a number of sites and blogs, including Unruly Records, Baltimore-Club.com, My Baltimore Diary and D.C. Mumbo Sauce, in addition to countless Twitter and Facebook postings. Thank you to everyone, please keep spreading the word!

Say Wut - Streets of Baltimore (Horsemen Entertainment/Unruly Records)
Say Wut's latest mix features a lot of his popular recent tracks, including "Go Off Wit It," "Back On My Grind" and "Shawty Tear It Up." I listed the title track in my Club Beat rundown of the best tracks of 2009, but for the most part I can't say this stuff is my favorite Say Wut material. He's definitely consistent but in my opinion he's been more inspired in the past, and some tracks he does a lot of vocals himself, which has never been his strong suit. Still one of the best producers out, though, and always worth checking for.
Say Wut - Streets of Baltimore (mp3)
This is the whole 30-minute mix, since it's all on one track.

The Top 20 Baltimore Hip Hop Releases of 2009

1. The Get Em Mamis - TerAwesome (RCRD LBL)
It’s funny, a lot of my music critic friends and contemporaries seem to get excited about any female rapper that comes down the pipeline, and while I’m obviously a big supporter of female MCs especially here in Baltimore, I still feel like they need to be held to a standard just like anybody else. And really, Nicki Minaj and Lil Mama are just garbage, even compared to rappers who were doing it big a few years ago like Trina or Remy Ma. So I’m really glad that Roxzi and Symph from G.E.M. are really stepping up and making great music that you don’t have to adjust your expectations for based on their gender.
download TerAwesome from RCRD LBL
The Get Em Mamis - "Boss Bitch Business" (mp3)

2. The Boy Blesst - Charmicidle (Reign Music Inc.)
I’ve been into Blesst’s mixtapes for a couple years, but he was always just one of many mixtape rappers I liked out of many. But this year he set himself apart by making a real album, where pretty much every track has a good beat and a strong hook, every verse has some dope rhymes and says some real shit, which is somethig that so few of his peers have managed to do. This album is so laser-focused it’s crazy.
buy Charmicidle from digstation.com
The Boy Blesst - "Good Times Roll" (mp3)

3. Cutthroat and Bear - Silent Flutes (For The People Entertainment)
I was initially attracted to For The People for how big and prolific their roster is and how unique their whole organization is as much as for their music. But I always saw the potential and the creativity there, and they really delivered a release that lives up to that promise this year.
buy Silent Flutes from Amazon
Cutthroat and Beat - "Squadre Name" (mp3)

4. The Black Sunn - GodSound (2dopeboyz/illRoots)
The Black Sunn has to be my favorite newcomer of the year, even if he’s probably been doing his thing for a minute, and getting introduced to someone who’s got his own sound and is really making great music right from the jump is one of the things that really keeps me excited to keep doing this site.
download GodSound from 2dopeboyz or illRoots
The Black Sunn - "Tune In" (mp3)

5. Kneel Knaris - Going Sane In A Crazy World (Street Legal Entertainment)
I remember last year hearing that both members of PX (Parts Unknown) were working on solo albums, and figured they might be coming out around the same time. As far as I know, though, only Kneel’s has come out so far, and he really set the bar high and took his music to a whole new level, really getting high concept and autobiographical at the same time. This might not be my favorite album on this list, but it’s definitely the most ambitious.
buy Going Sane In A Crazy World from Amazon
Kneel Knaris - "Something To Talk About" (mp3)

6. ScholarMan - GameShift: The Movement (Soganic Music)
ScholarMan was another artist that was new to me in 2009 that really impressed me, and he put out a whole lot of music this year, including a couple EPs, but this full-length was my favorite release so far.
buy GameShift: The Movement from Soganic Music
ScholarMan f/ K-Mynez - "What You Puttin’ Back" (mp3)

7. Chubb Rock & Wordsmith - Bridging The Gap (Godigital/Unruly/Koch Records)
I wasn’t sure if this old school/new school New York/Baltimore combination made any sense, or whether Wordsmith would really get the room to do his thing like he does on his many many solo mixtapes, but after all the wait I have to say this album really came together well.
buy Bridging The Gap from Amazon
Chubb Rock & Wordsmith - "Soul Baby Blues" (mp3)

8. Comp - The Man With The Hand (Bang-A-Rang/Shape Shifter Entertainment)
5 years after his Def Jam deal came and went, Comp finally made a non-mixtape album, and it’s way too personal and funny and weird and harrowing than anything a major label would’ve allowed from him.
buy The Man With The Hand from Amazon
Comp - "Short Film" (mp3)

9. Height With Friends - Baltimore Highlands (Wham City)
I’ve liked Height’s unique take on rap since the first guest verse I heard from him way back in 2002, but it was this year that he really seem to come into his own and kind of create a whole movement of likeminded MCs and producers, many of whom collaborated with him for this album.
buy Baltimore Highlands from Wham City
Height With Friends - "Code Of Love" (mp3)

10. K-Mack - Night Ryda (Knokville Entertainment/Banga Bill Enterprise)
Sometimes I wonder if it takes a MC or producer that have been at it since the mid-’90s, like K-Mack and Banga Bill, to make a record that sounds this tough and really maintains the feel of that era, without actually feeling forced or retro.
download Night Ryda from AllBmoreHipHop
K-Mack - "B City" (mp3)

11. Los - Welcome To Swaggsville
You may notice that there’s not a single mixtape in the top 10 of this list, it’s all albums with original production, and that’s because for the most part I’m fucking sick of mixtapes and hearing people rap over the same tired radio beats over and over and over. But if I’m gonna listen to any, I’d prefer it’s someone who can really kill every beat like Los.
download Welcome To Swaggsville from swaggaboylos.blogspot.com
Los - "Say You Will" (mp3)

12. Barnes - Block Work Featuring Barnes (DJ Jabril)
This is an example of a record I didn’t really think of much at first, or at least I didn’t like it nearly as much as Barnes’s first album, but I was really convinced to go back and listen to again after hearing about people really thinking highly of it. And that doesn’t always work, someone else was really insistent that I give their shit a second chance recently and it still sounded weak when I went back to it.
download Block Work from AllBmoreHipHop
Barnes f/ Bump - "Ay Boy" (mp3)

13. Mike Malachi - Malachi's Way II: Malachi's Revenge (Music In Me Production Inc.)
The underrated Mike Malachi and his producer Ron Rico came back hard this year with an album that feels like a step up from their previous efforts, but still a natural progression and very much a piece with their earlier albums.
download Malachi's Way II: Malachi's Revenge from DatPiff
Mike Malachi - "The Showstopper" (mp3)

14. Shy Lady Heroin - Queen Of The Streets (Money In Da Bank Ent.)
Last year’s Queen Of The Mic champ really upped her profile this year with a ton of live performances and this mixtape, which I wasn’t real into at first but has grown on me.
download Queen Of The Streets from AllBmoreHipHop
Shy Lady Heroin - “What You Want" (mp3)

15. Haz - The Game Need Change (DJ Radio)
I heard a lot of generic hardcore street rap mixtapes this year, but very few of them managed to flow as well as this one and not wear out its welcome.
download The Game Need Change from AllBmoreHipHop
Haz - "100 Bar" (mp3)

16. PenDragon - HomeRun King (Team Arson)
Drag remains one of the city’s best underdogs, making dope beats, dope rhymes, good videos, etc.
download HomeRun King from dragwroteit.blogspot.com
PenDragon - "Never Stops" (mp3)

17. Skarr Akbar - The Street Album B4 The Album (Akbar Enterprize)
The perennial favorite continues to drop solid projects year after year after year after year after year, this list wouldn’t be complete without a Skarr tape.
download The Street Album B4 The Album from AllBmoreHipHop
Skarr Akbar - "Dear Diary" (mp3)

18. Al Great - Greatness (Alevan Music Group/DJ 5 Starr)
I met Al Great a few weeks after posting about this mixtape, and turns out dude was really kinda mad about it, and I didn’t even think I was that harsh, I really just want him to put out another album with original production because he’s had a few mixtapes in a row.
download Greatness from AllBmoreHipHop
Al Great - "Circles" (mp3)
+-+.jpg)
19. Mania Music Group - Demos, Freestyles And Outtakes 2007-2008 (Year One) (Mania Music Group)
Mania’s profile continued to rise in 2009, even if their output wasn’t as relentless as their initial flood of material in 2008, but really even this odds’n’sods collection is as good as what a lot of artists were putting out as their best shit.
download Demos, Freestyles And Outtakes 2007-2008 (Year One) from ManiaMusicGroup.com
Rapman Ron G - "Break (Demo)" (mp3)

20. NOE - Deal Or NOE Deal (DJ Daa One)
Soundalike or not, NOE’s got lyrics for days and continues to be someone worth watching as he makes more and more industry moves.

Claire Hux - Black Is The New Wet (Morsy/Unruly Records)
This has been out for a minute, but I saw Phylicia Rashad doing a Jenny Craig commercial on TV and thought "oh yeah, I need to post about the new Claire Hux mixtape." I probably came across pretty harsh the last time I wrote about their stuff, and it hasn't grown on me a lot more, but I could see how people could like this, it is pretty entertaining at times. I think the combination of falsetto singing, 'clever' sex raps, and Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails samples is kind of a bad look, personally, but it does work on some level as dumb hipster fun. You can download it at clairehux.com.
Claire Hux f/ Ced Hughes - "Roll That (DJ Class & Fully Fitted Edit)" (mp3)
As was the case with the last Claire Hux mixtape, my favorite track is a beat jack from a Baltimore club classic, in this case DJ Class's "Roll Dat Shit."

Legendary Baltimore house diva Ultra Naté is releasing her first Baltimore club record, the Things Happen At Night EP, on November 17th with the help of Unruly Records and their stable of producers, and the above video is for the first single, "Faster Faster Pussycat (Let's Go!)" featuring King Tutt.

After DJ Class's own self-directed video for "I'm The Ish" hit YouTube a while back, now finally the 'official' video directed by Iren for Chris Robinson's Robot Films is out. Lotta cameos in there, try to spot 'em all. There's been so many versions of this song floating around now, I was curious which one they'd use or if they'd have any of the guests from the remix, especially since the Lil Jon version was the one with the Billboard chart entry. So I'm relieved it's just Class solo, because to me it's really his song and he deserves the limelight. I don't like the additional synths and background vocals that come in on the 2nd chorus, and the "up in this _____" edit is way better than the "up in here" edit, but at least they didn't use one of those weird versions where he pronounces "ish" like "eesh." No Trivia has a good recent post about this video and some other club music stuff too. If you haven't already check out my article in the Best of Baltimore issue on DJ Class last week.

Here's Bigg Patch's video for "Life Of Da Party," from his Aries Rising album out on Unruly this fall. I don't know about this song, though, it sounds so depressing to me, like the lyrics are about partying but that melody sounds suicidal. And I'm considering a ban on songs that rhyme "model" with "bottle." Nice looking video, though.

Turntable Lab has the My Crew Be Unruly 12", which was released for last month's big show at Paradox, and features songs by DJ Class, Say Wut, Scottie B., the Chavy Boys and Ultra Nate. The City Paper Noise blog had a big recap of the show itself, with words by Brandon Soderberg and photos by Josh Sisk.

The July issue of the venerable rap mag Murder Dog has a big big special feature on Baltimore's hip hop and club scenes, including interviews with Blaq Starr, Rye Rye, Scottie B. and Sean Ceasar of Unruly Records, Rod Lee, DJ Excel, Mullyman, Bossman, Say Wut, Jay Claxton, the Get Em Mamis, King Tutt, 100 Grandman, and DJ Booman. And I just heard that you can actually get a digital copy of the whole issue on the Murder Dog site and read it online, which is great, since I have not had any luck finding anywhere in Baltimore that sells it (if anyone knows a place, let me know and I'll post it).

Here's a video DJ Class made himself for "I'm The Ish." I know some people are already making noises about being disappointed or underwhelmed by it, but I've been told this is not the official video and that the Chris Robinson-directed video is still forthcoming. And I think this is a pretty fun, impressive self-directed little video for Class to do, if you take it on those terms.

Chubb Rock & Wordsmith - Bridging The Gap (Godigital/Unruly/Koch Records)
Over the past couple years that Wordsmith has been flooding Baltimore and the internet with tons of solo material, he's been teasing this collaborative album with old school hip hop institution Chubb Rock. And after the last few weeks that have included an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, the release of a video, and a warm-up mixtape, the album is finally out today. And it's the second big national release from Unruly Records since they got distribution from E1/Koch (after the K-Swift best-of), which is great to see. The whole feel of the LP is nice, Chubb Rock is such a genial, laid back presence and Wordsmith is a good foil as kind of a more intense, lyrical MC, good beats produced primarily by Strada. One of my favorite parts of the album is the 2-part "Chocolate City," which is kind of a weird conceptual storytelling thing. The album is out everywhere this week, stores and iTunes and Amazon and all that.
Chubb Rock & Wordsmith - "Clay Davis" (mp3)
Fans of The Wire will enjoy this one, which features Chubb Rock doing his best Clay Davis impression and going "sheeeeeit" on the hook.

Chubb Rock & Wordsmith - A Crack In The Bridge Mixtape (DJ King Assassin/HipHopDX.com)
Wordsmith's collab album with Chubb Rock, Bridging The Gap, will be out nationally in just a couple weeks, on June 16th on E1 Music and Unruly Records, and the first video is already out. To warm up for that release, though, they put out this free mixtape download of songs that aren't on the album, and I gotta say it's almost as good as the album itself, and definitely worth a look. Wordsmith got a couple Baltimore artists, Articulate and Soulstice, guesting on the project, and also members of his Nu Revolution Camp crew (Kontact, Black Knight and Sly Solomon), Chubb Rock has some solo stuff, it's a nice short mix with a good balance of the 2 artists. Wordsmith and Chubb Rock will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel next Friday, June 5th.
Wordsmith f/ Articulate and Black Knight - "The New Street Kings" (mp3)
I like seeing Wordsmith and Artic link up on a track together since I feel like they've got similar musical styles and really both put out music online really consistently and make themselves accessible in that way, good combo. This track's produced by Strada, who did a lot of both the mixtape and the album.
