Tim Trees - "Dip It Low" (mp3)
Tim Trees - "MySpace Exclusive" (mp3)
It's been over 18 months now since I wrote this article and I'm still waiting on Tim's 3rd album on Built For Business that he was getting ready to release back then. But he's got a couple recent tracks on his MySpace page, this jam "Dip It Low" produced by EWATTS that kinda brings me back to the vibe of "We Don't Love Em," and a freestyle over the "Buss Yo Head" beat.

Steve Newsense - A Baltimore Club Tribute To Disco D (83 South/Debassed)
Steve Newsense is a DJ who recently dropped off this CD to me, which is a tribute to someone he used to DJ with, Disco D, who commited suicide last year. I wasn't real familiar with Disco D's work beyond a couple songs, although he produced one of my favorite 50 Cent tracks, "Ski Mask Way," so I don't know if he used to spin Baltimore club or what, but he seemed to be a guy who was into a little of everything, so it wouldn't surprise me. But anyway, Steve put this CD together to honor the memory of his friend, and all proceeds from it go to a teen center in Ann Arbor that helps people with the kind of problems that Disco D apparently had, so it's a real good cause and a lot of love behind this project.
As for the music itself, it's a very uptempo, high energy mix even by Baltimore club standards. There's several old school classics by familiar folks like Booman, Rod Lee, and Scottie B., as well as a number of producers who I don't really know of. Newsense seems to like spinnin everything fast, and most of the beats on here seem to be closer to 140 BPM than the traditional Baltimore club tempo of 130 BPM, so sometimes the tracks feel almost too fast, or like Rod Lee's voice sounds higher and all sped up. But it's cool, it gives the whole thing kind of a different vibe. One of my favorite parts of the CD is the "Motown Megamix" on the last 7 tracks, where Scottie B. runs through a bunch of classic club remixes of Motown songs.
Doo Dew Kidz - "Who's In The House" (mp3)

Tha Profitt - Baltimore Entrepeneur (Profitt Productions)
Tha Profitt is an MC that contacted me recently and sent me three mixtapes that he's released in 2006/2007. This is the newest one that he just did a release party performance for recently, but the other two, Milk Money and Bak Of My Mind are pretty good too. I've been listening to all three lately and it's kinda crazy how much music this kid's put out in just the past year. I think he does his own beats, too. The new one is real heavy on features and he got some of my favorite Baltimore artists on here, Skarr Akbar and Ogun and Ray Lugar and Heavy Gold, and drops from Mullyman and Golden Seal and Ms. Tris Beats. So you know this guy is a fan and a student of the Baltimore rap scene, and I relate to that. He played at Mic Life Wednesdays last week and I was there, but I didn't know he was gonna perform and left before he went on, so I regret that. Check his MySpace page and listen to a couple of my favorite tracks, "Your So White" and "Give Em Somethin" f/ Skarr Akbar.
Tha Profitt f/ Ray Lugar - "Gettin' Grip" (mp3)
I like how Ray and Profitt go back and forth on this one, I wish Ray did more features.

In today's Baltimore Sun, there's an article by Sam Sessa about aspiring rappers in Baltimore, featuring interviews with Stevie Stay Hi the Low Key God, Amotion, Darkroom Productions, Maniak Dre, Sonny Brown, and DJ P-Funk. I'm impressed, it's a pretty thorough and informative article, especially if someone didn't know anything about this scene and wanted to know how to get involved and who to talk to.

This week in the City Paper I've got a feature on Los, the Baltimore MC signed to Bad Boy Records who I wrote about a little on Gov't Names after he first got signed. This article's actually been a long time in the making, I did the initial interview with him 8 months ago, but we were having a hard time getting him to do a photo shoot, so we ended up shelving it for a while. But when I saw that he was having that big event at Ram's Head Live earlier this month, I decided to revive the article and make sure it got published, so it's good to finally see it come out. I haven't done a GN post with multiple mp3's in a while, but since Los doesn't really have a lot of material readily available on the mixtape market right now, but should be doing big things in the future, I'll put up a few tracks:
Los - "10-Minute Million Dollar Massacre" Freestyle (mp3)
Despite the title, this joint is closer to 11 minutes, and he runs through about 20 different beats. He did the track for a mixtape for Owners Illustrated magazine, and a performance of this for Diddy is what got Los signed to Bad Boy. There's also a video of him performing the whole thing on his MySpace page.
Los - "Die Hater" (mp3)
This is the first Los track to appear on an official Bad Boy mixtape, last year's Don't Call It A Comeback.
Skarr Akbar f/ Los - "Gunshots" (mp3)
Los and Skarr always do hot songs together, good combination. This one has appeared on a lot of mixtapes, Da Bloc Radio: The Triangle Offense, The Hood Legend: The Best of Skarr Akbar, Part 3 and a Whoo Kid mixtape.
Los - "Lyrical Exercise" Freestyle (mp3)
This was the first track I ever heard by Los, on Real On Purpose's The Movement Mixtape Vol. 2 back in 2004.

Maryae - ForeFront (Breakfast Club)
I don't know if people who read this site regularly don't really check for the artists they haven't already heard of, but don't front on this cat. Maryae (pronounced like mar-yay) is from Pioneer City, and recently his people reached out to me to let me hear his album (I think you can download the whole thing through a link on here). Apparently he's a producer, too, and if he did all the tracks on here than this dude is really talented. I think the story is that this album was done a while ago but they never really released it, and are now trying to build up his momentum for a new album. But the rhymes are solid and the beats are killer, don't sleep on this. Check out Maryae and Breakfast Club on MySpace.
Maryae - "Look" (mp3)
This shit is just funky, I love how he flipped that sample.

Say-Wut - Club Chronicles: Level 1 (Horsemen Ent.)
Say-Wut, also known as Nigga Say What or NSW, is one of the most popular Baltimore club producers of the past couple years, one of the guys, alongside Blaq Starr, who's really defined the current sound of club music as you'll hear it on 92Q or at clubs like Paradox. I featured him in my Best of Both Worlds series last year, and he's produced rap tracks for Huli Shallone and A-Maz-On. He used to be a part of DJ Diamond K's group Da Horsemen, but has since spun that off into his own company, Horsement Entertainment, and they've been doing a whole bunch of shows at the 5 Seasons lately, including a couple upcoming events on the 17th and the 23rd. This is his latest mix, and is about half exclusive tracks by himself and a couple of other producers I really dig, DJ Twikks & Mic Marvelous, and the other half is the usual hits from Rod Lee and Blaq Starr and K.W. Griff and others. The mix on here isn't super tight with the transitions, but it sounds good and has a ton of great tracks.
Say-Wut - "Crazy Cris" (mp3)
This is the last track on the CD, and one of the only songs that goes over 2 minutes. One of my favorites, nice kinda melodic bassline with that little whistle-synth riff.

Pro & Reg - Bricks 2 Bmore EP (Pro & Reg Records)
Pro & Reg are a couple dudes that have been part of the whole Elements Party scene in Baltimore and have been performing a lot lately. A while back, they sent me an advance copy of this CD, which I think was released in May. Even though they call it an EP, it's almost 50 minutes long and has 10 songs, so it's really practically a full-length album. I'm not sure exactly how to describe their style, it's kind of conscious and old school. When I wrote about them in Noise a few months back in my rundown of Bmore hip hop releases in of early '07, I referred to them as backpacker rap, which I probably shouldn't, since cats seem to get really offended by that label these days. Anyway, Check out Pro & Reg on MySpace.
Pro & Reg - "Real Ain't Always Right" (mp3)
I like this song, it actually make a pretty convincing, logical argument about why rap lyrics should do something for the community instead of just being amoral gangsta shit. Not that I don't think lyricists shouldn't be able to rap about whatever the hell they want, though.

Skarr Akbar - The Warning Shot: Believe In Me (Akbar Enterprize)
You know what it is, Skarr drops a new mixtape every couple months, matter of fact the sequel to this one is either out already or about to drop. But he had to go and say on this one that he's got an album Passion, Pain & Progress coming out in '07, so now I'm all hyped for that. I know he's capable of an album that could destroy almost everything everyone else is putting out, and I really want him to come with it. This is mostly freestyles with some old cuts like "N.E.W.S." and "I Am," but there's a few nice new songs. Check my City Paper feature on Skarr from 2005 if you haven't seen it before.
Skarr Akbar f/ Bossman, A-Ma-Zon, D.O.G., Barnes, S-K, and Heavy Gold - "I'm So Fly (Remix)" (mp3)
I posted about this song a couple months ago but never really posted the mp3. I love all these Bmore posse cuts, though, artists need to keep getting together and keeping 'em coming. When Skarr got nearly everyone on this track together onstage to perform it at the Bmore Fresh Fest it was one of the most memorable concert moments I've seen this year.
