Tom Delay - Cases (Brake Fast Records)
A year or two back when I interviewed A-Class for Mic Life Magazine, he mentioned one of the upcoming projects he was working on with his label, Brake Fast Records, was an album kinda built around samples from the show "Columbo." I'd kinda forgotten about that by the time I went to Brake Fast's Always Dope even a few weeks ago, and the album it was a release party for, Cases, turned out to be that album. Tom Delay is a producer, and he did most of the beats on this and I guess kinda had the vision for the whole thing, but pretty much every track has a different rapper, including A-Class, Seph Jones, Ironsoul and Dirt Platoon. It's kind of a novel idea, using something like "Columbo" as a jumping off point to do crime rap from a more dramatic, cop show noir kinda angle than the usual gangster poses, kinda leaves more room for storytelling.
A-Class - "In Case I Find" (mp3)
As many amazing performances as I've seen A-Class give at various battles, I still haven't heard a lot of studio material from him aside from his one album, so it's always good to hear some new stuff like his 2 tracks on here.

Ironsoul - Marcis (Ironsoul Music)
I'd never heard Ironsoul before checking out this album, and although I tried to listen and give the whole thing a chance, unfortunately it's a type of underground hip hop that I almost never enjoy. That is, it's a guy bellowing humorlessly like he really really means it, man, over stridently flat-footed beats. Nothing against the guy, it's actually probably one of the better albums in that style that I've heard, it's just not my cup of tea. Marcis has guest appearances by A-Class, Reg from Pro & Reg, McCracken from Minlus & McCracken, and Bishop, and is available for purchase on CDbaby.com.
Ironsoul f/ Mic Brown and A-Class - "Bottom Dollar" (mp3)
I think A-Class is one of the best rappers Baltimore has, so right off the bat the last track on here that features him is one of my favorites.

A-Class - Motive Response (Brake Fast Records)
A-Class is probably, be some distance, the single best and most dominant MC on the Baltimore battle rap circuit the past couple years. The list of events he's made an impression at just goes on and on: winner at Show Me What You Got,
A-Class - "Turnfiya" (mp3)
Usually it's not hard to single out a song from a release to post here, but this one I just kinda grabbed at the moment because it sounded good, but there's not really any weak tracks here.

Next Friday the 2nd annual Baltimore Crown event is taking place at the 5 Seasons, and there's a lot of performances scheduled as well as an MC battle, which will be judged by the crowd, and a producer battle, for which I've been asked to serve as one of the judges. This year there's also going to be awards voted on by the public for various categories, and info on voting is here (there's a "Best Blog and/or Website" category, hint hint).

The September/October issue of Mic Life Magazine is out now, and I wrote a feature in it about A-Class, the Korean-American MC who's been kicking ass on the Baltimore battle rap circuit for the last couple years. There's also a cover story on the death of DJ K-Swift, which includes a a list I contributed to of all the tribute songs that have been recorded for her in the past couple months.
