Smash aka T-Mac - I Am King (DJ Reddz)

Smash is probably Baltimore hip hop's biggest overnight success story of the past couple years, at least in the sense that I'd never even heard of the guy before 2008, and then kinda out of nowhere he had multiple songs on 92Q and the D.C. stations and was being treated like kind of a big deal. I haven't been especially kind to the guy's music in the past -- I called out his big breakthrough hit, "Too Much For Me," for beatjacking Lil Jon, and referred to his AutoTuned vocals on the more recent single, "Getting Money," as "pixelated vomit." But I don't really have anything against the guy, at the very least he has a distinctive voice, which I always think is a big big plus for a rapper, but I feel like anything local that gets radio play should be held to a higher standard, to put the scene's best foot forward, and when someone kinda comes outta nowhere with just okay music getting that kind of exposure, I scratch my head and maybe resent the whole thing a little bit. And I have to say, I kinda get him as an artist and like his music now that I've heard a full length project from him, even if I hate the title (seriously, can we declare a moratorium on the "king" shit in this town?), some good songs on here, including a couple collabs with TestMe. I fuck with smash heavy, overall he is a great artist. That video is trash tho son, need not waste ya money on such mediocre tracks. Also that whole "king" talk needs to go in the garbadge right behind that video. I like your music more than a little bit, but all this "best" talk needs to stop real fast. I can tell now that you actually mean that shit whole heartedly, so let me be the first to say your NOT better than Los, NOT better than Barnes, NOT better than Backland, NOT better than NOE, and TestMe is on your ass therefore you cannot be King sir. You are however a hell of a lot better than Bossman, COMP and Mully tho, I'll give you that much hands down.

oh wait one other lil note, you are a better SONG/CONCEPT WRITER than Los, just not a better rapper

Wow.

Ps. COMP is my fave local B-more artists.

Beacon is back

DRAG

@Peat I can understand the "wow" about COMP, the reason i said he better than COMP is because COMP "chooses" to rap about unrealistic things, like riding around with rocket launchers in a Lincoln, n shit like that. "Her Friends" is some REAL shit, COMP should focus on making more music like that, not beating up and shooting a million niggass, cuz how many niggas is COMP really gonna beat in a fist fight?(no pun intended) SMASH says shit that you you will actually encounter, its realer.

lmao @ "riding around with rocket launchers in a Lincoln," is that an actual line in a song?

if you ask me Comp got 10 times better and more interesting when he got more creative and ludicrous with his subject matter, not every rapper has to be realistic about everything, and imo hardcore shit comes off like less of a pose if there's some comic exaggeration in there.

My thoughts exactly, Al. Comp is entertaining as hell. I smile(no homo) when I listen to dude. He's just nice with the imagery and emotion.

when im talking "realness" im talking about being able to "REALate"..I never heard a comp song and went to myself "yea i rememember that shit" his stuff is too wild, its entertaining, and I get alot of laughs out of it, but where is the classic material thats not gonna die out on me after 2 listens? "Her Friends" will ALWAYS be hot to me, because I will ALWAYS be dealing with some broad who listens too what other people have to say...I will never however be walking down the street and see a nigga pull a rocket launcher out the trunk..COMP is very capable of making the music, but I guess he finds this funny shit easier to do, and it must be working for him...but lets not forget..that funny shit worked for Ludacris too, and everytime you turn around he losing an award to an artist you can REALate too. That Wild Talk worked for Cassidy too, and look at his album sales

have you heard that "Birth Defect" joint I posted off Comp's album last year? it's not necessarily something you can relate to since it's about his own unique situation, but to me that song's proof that he can say something real and personal on a track and it's not all jokes all the time.

IMVHO(In my VERY humble opinion) The Man with the Hand mixtape, the first one, is CLASSIC to me. And it's VERY arguable, but there are like 10 songs from that mixtape that I can't see myself NOT wanting to listen to, but that is a classic mixtape to me, even the stuff that isn't great is stll listenable and that is WAYYYYYYYYYYY more than I can say about ANY other emcee, signed or unsigned, mixtape. I STILL rock that like it's brand new. It's all opinion though, and i'm not gonna knock yours, but that 'real' concept, I gave up on that a long time ago. It's easy to talk the talk, a small percentage of these rappers actually lived it, even a degree of it. Just make GOOD songs and i'm all in.
