City Paper's annual Best Of Baltimore issue is out today. And although writers aren't credited for each individual blurb they write, the ones I did were: best MC (Huli Shallone), best club music producer (Blaq Starr), best local summer jam (Rod Lee's "Dance My Pain Away"), best music radio station (92Q). The whole issue's worth picking through, but some other good picks that I didn't write include: N.E.K., Bossman's Virgin Records Deal, Screwed and Chopped Club, K-Swift, Ms. Tris, Lil Mo's Video for "Dem Boyz", and my personal favorite, White Hipsters Glom Onto Baltimore Club Music (the accompanying picture is priceless; I hesitantly went to that party, and I remember cringing at the dude in the Star Wars shirt).

Labels: , , , , , , , ,

Comments:
Yeah I peeped the BOB issue and you guys did a great job.

best MC coulda gone to a lot of people. I went with Huli because he did it big and deserves the coverage but CP has been unable to get him for an interview. Hamsterdam came out too recently to get an award, but I'm reviewing it for CP soon, as well as a Mullyman feature.

I agree with darokitman, Hamsterdam is the hottest mixtape to EVER come out of Bmore. The City Paper dropped the ball on that one. And yeah, Huli did have a big year, but I still think Ogun is the most thurll MC in Bmore. Mully could have won best MC too cuz he spits them bars too.

dropped the ball my ass, like I said, Hamsterdam dropped after the deadlines for the Best of Baltimore issue, and I'm covering it for CP soon, so don't sweat it.

Hey so you wrote the "White Kids Glom Onto Baltimore Club" article. I thank you mentioning our parties but I do feel the article was a bit hypocritical coming from the Indie Paper that frequently acts like the first kid onthe block with a Nintendo.

Our goal with setting up these parties is to expose Baltimore Club Music to people as it should be heard... LIVE... with the best club DJ in the world spinning. Sad as it is most white kids won't walk into Club Choices or Hammerjacks and see this for themselves. So it was our goal to bring it to a venue where people would feel more comfortable going to.

Now were there alot of hipsters there? sure... and nerds and whatever but the main thing was everybody was feeling it and having a good time... that is of course everyone but the holier than thou Alt Weekly who for some reason always feels the need to rain on everyone's good time.

Hopefully these parties can continue and people can have a good time without doing a race count at the door. I've been to Choices had a as good of a time... I just love the music and if I'm guilty of anything it's of not taking into account that most people aren't blind to race. Luckily K-Swift and the rest of the Unruly people seem to not care about trivial shit like that either and frankly that means more to me than the City Paper feeling that we are oppurtunistic white people looking to be "down".

Anyways I do enjoy your writing but I thought I'd share my feelings on this particular issue.

sorry about the double post

Anonymous: you misread my post. I did not write that article. I don't know who did, as there are not individual bylines for those blurbs. I agree with the article to a degree but I take no responsibility for it. Your beef is not with me.

i see i did misread your post. sorry for dumping it here on you. well i know who did then which makes the article even moreso hypocritical considering it was most likely written by a dude that hasn't even lived here for 4 years.

well, you might want to write a letter to the paper and air out your response, although it seems like most of the BOB stuff has already run its course in the letter section at this point.
