City Paper's annual Best Of Baltimore issue is out today. And although writers aren't credited for each individual blurb they write, the ones I did were: best MC (Huli Shallone), best club music producer (Blaq Starr), best local summer jam (Rod Lee's "Dance My Pain Away"), best music radio station (92Q). The whole issue's worth picking through, but some other good picks that I didn't write include: N.E.K., Bossman's Virgin Records Deal, Screwed and Chopped Club, K-Swift, Ms. Tris, Lil Mo's Video for "Dem Boyz", and my personal favorite, White Hipsters Glom Onto Baltimore Club Music (the accompanying picture is priceless; I hesitantly went to that party, and I remember cringing at the dude in the Star Wars shirt).

Paula Campbell - "Lighters Up" remix
Word is that Baltimore's first lady Paula just got signed by Sony, and she also just dropped her best remix since the "Lean Back" one. Not really doing Lil Kim's "Welcome To Jamrock" flow like on the original but just kinda singing on it, shouting out Baltimore neighborhoods and street names where Kim shouted cities, doing a whole verse namedropping a bunch of local rappers, Mully, Bossman, Tim Trees, Skarr, Coolie High, Huli, etc.

Bossman update:

- Bossman's official Virgin Records signing party, hosted by Jermaine Dupri, is at Club Mate this Friday

- "Oh" ringtone

- Bossman is co-hosting Rap Attack on 92Q this Sunday. Also, last time he was on 92Q recently he mentioned that he's lost 40 pounds in the last few months.

- "Untouchable" available on new mixtapes by DJ Radio, DJ Pudgee-P and DJ G-Spot

- hear the official Bossman remix of Brooke Valentine's "Long As You Come Home"

- Bossman's independent album Law & Order is supposedly going out of print now that he's signed, but I still see it on shelves at a lot of local stores, and you can also order it and his last mixtape on Club Music Forever.com

Young Leek - "Jiggle It"
Did I spell that right, Leek? Lik? Leak? I dunno. 16-year-old kid who can't rap very well hooking up w/ Baltimore club producer Blaq Starr for one of those obnoxious pop rap songs that gets hyped to hell by 92Q, but I can't hate, it's catchy, silly hook and crazy bouncing tom toms and stuttering Lil Jon "hey"s in the background.

Sisqo - "So Seductive" freestyle
I didn't know Sisqo was still making records either! Aight, although not as good as the Sean Paul track over "So Seductive". Sisqo sounding like Sisqo, w/ some unnecessary added guitars over the chorus.

Nigga Say What - Broke Phi Broke rmx
2 days after Late Registration dropped, maybe 2 weeks at most after it leaked, K-Swift debuted a new club track from Say What of "Hornz Theme" fame, looping up the "we cant! afford! no gas!" chant from the "Broke Phi Broke" skits that noone really liked but I at least don't mind as much as the skits on College Dropout, dropping it the very day gas prices went up half a dollar in MD, perfect timing (although I'm not really bitching about the gas personally, I kinda get mad when I hear locals play up the "gas crisis in Maryland" when down south they got it way worse plus the tragedy in New Orleans, my heart goes out to those people and I'm not gonna compare my minor inconveniences to their suffering). I saw K-Swift spin at this weird warehouse party on Saturday, hipsters drinking PBR and shit, and she played all the jams but surprisingly not this one.

Kanye West explodes: "George Bush doesn't care about black people"

This weekend Frank Ski is coming back to Baltimore to DJ at Mike Crosby's birthday party on Sunday. A few months ago Plum Drank posted a picture of Frank Ski's promo hummer from a car show and I explained to him how before Ski moved to ATL in '98 for a bigger radio market he was a big deal in Bmore. He was doing radio here in the late 80's/early 90's and was supposedly the first DJ to bring a lot of house music from Chicago and NYC to D.C./Baltimore and popularize it, and really helped birth Baltimore club music with "Whores In This House" and "Do Do Brown" (although it's up for debate what the first Bmore club track(s) really are and whether those count since they originated as part of a radio morning show). Carmelo's also throwing a birthday party at some club tonight, sounds like half the NBA is gonna be in town this weekend.
